The Jatiluwih Rice Terraces – Unesco World Heritage
Jatiluwih Rice Terraces
Beautiful and pristine, the Jatiluwih Rice Terraces are left alone by the crowds that throng other parts of Bali. These gentle green terraces are not as accessible as other parts of Bali, but certainly well worth the effort for its beauty. Behind this picture of perfect unmatched beauty, is also a great deal of ingenuity and high levels of technology. Some of the rice terraces are thought to be be created as long as 500 years ago, and indeed showcase one of the oldest and most complex systems of agriculture. When you visit, take a romantic stroll, or hire a horse to explore. This is natural Bali at its best.
The Jatiluwih rice terraces are located in the middle of Bali near Ganung Batukaru. The area is very rural. To get here, you hire a driver, drive here yourself, or stay at one of the nearby resorts. We rented a scooter in Ubud and drove here in about 1,5h (approx 40km). It was quite an interesting drive with all the traffic. It you want to rent a car with a driver, they do not leave from Ubud earlier than 8AM. If you want to be alone on the terraces, rent a scooter and leave at 6AM. The drive through the villages is amazing and you will be at the terraces well before anyone else. If you want to make some sunrise and sunset images, you will have to spend the night somewhere closer it the area.
